“How blessed are those who keep justice”

The problem of evil is it resides in all of us.

The problem of authority is it has the propensity for corruption.

The problem with Christians is we struggle to know how to apply Biblical truth to current events, resulting in the creation of biblecultureandme.com.

I am a proud Dallas resident. I have lived in this amazing city for 7 + years and have loved Dallas all my life. All of my family is from Dallas and I always hoped God would allow me to live here one day. I am the Girl’s Minister at First Baptist Dallas where my Dad is the Senior Pastor and husband the Student Minister. The very heart of our ministry is downtown Dallas. I am devastated to see the murders in the place I call home. I am also devastated to see Christian’s uncertainty in how to respond.

If you have been glancing at your newsfeed, there are vast differences in responses from Christians on social media in regard to the recent police shootings in downtown Dallas. Some people argue we need to all just love one another. Others don’t understand why everyone just can’t get along. Others use it as a platform to point out the error in their opponent’s viewpoints. A trend I am seeing in Christians is that they want to speak to these matters and represent God well but are sometimes unsure of exactly what verse to point to for direction and encouragement.

If you are wondering how to apply the Bible to today’s world this blog is for you! Sometimes the Bible blatantly says exactly what to do through a specific verse (which is always nice!) and other matters call for us to look at principles found in Scripture. Here are the principles and verses in regard to the Dallas police shootings.

Principles & Verses:

1. God doesn’t see gray.

What seems confusing to us is not confusing to God. I come across so many people that try to change, distort, or pretty up Scripture to fit our 2016 culture. Nothing about the Bible has to be changed in order for it to apply to culture in 2016. What was true about human nature then, is true about human nature now. There were evil people murdering then and there evil people murdering  now. There were people disrespecting authority then and there are  people disrespecting authority now. It is our culture that needs to come back to God, not God or the Bible that needs a software update. Ecclesiastes 1:9 says, “There is nothing new under the sun.” So with that in mind, let’s look to the One who created the sun in the first place!

2. God cares about justice more than you do.

Now I am not pointing fingers because, as my friends and family and coworkers and fellow movie attendees can attest to, I’m usually the first to get heated about injustice. BUT the truth is God cares about injustice more than I do and more than you do. And that is a great thing. The fact that you and I get so upset about wrongdoing is proof of the Biblical truth we are all made in God’s image. The reason you get so mad when someone cuts you off is actually proof you are an eternal being (not an endorsement for road-rage!). Romans 9:14 says, “there is no injustice in God.” This means regardless of what is happening on the news, in your family, or in your city- God is going to have the last word and His will IS going to be accomplished. Remember Christians, we know who wins in the end! Rest assured when you are outraged, hurt, and angered by injustice- so is our Lord Jesus.

3. Our responsibility as Christians to love is different from government’s responsibility to punish evil. (Disclaimer: I 100% stole this from my Dad, however, it is in the Bible so I’m not expecting a copyright lawsuit!)

Have you ever heard people argue we just need to love one another as Christians? While it is true that we are to love others we also have a biblical responsibility to speak out against evil. Ephesians 5:11 says, “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” While we are to love as Christians, we are also to expose sin and evil. Jesus didn’t come to the world and tell us, “you know what, everything and everybody is doing just fine, please continue as you are.” He told us to repent of our sin and that we desperately needed a Savior. Through the awareness we are flawed comes the awareness of the need for God.

Romans 13: 1-5 states, “Every person is to be in subjection to governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger  who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.”

God has placed authorities to punish evildoers and policemen are actually called “ministers” in the Bible. When you are against the police there is reason to fear. This doesn’t mean that all policemen always make godly decisions but the Bible is clear that those who do right have no reason to fear the law.

As hurt, angry, and upset we may be- we have a God who cares about justice more than we do and who wins in the end! Please continue to pray with me for our country and remember the bible, culture, and me is a perfect mix!
